Roughly 10 years ago, Mystic Powerboats made a bold move. During the Miami International Boat Show, the company unveiled its first 42-foot center console model, showcasing a new direction for the brand. Alongside it sat the then-new C4400 catamaran, powered by stern-drive engines.
At the time, Mystic founder John Cosker faced a critical business challenge. While the company’s flagship C5000 catamaran was admired for its performance and craftsmanship, producing just a few units annually wasn’t enough to sustain long-term growth. The solution? Enter the rapidly expanding high-performance center console market.
The strategy paid off. Mystic quickly established itself as a serious contender in the segment, expanding its lineup to include 38-, 42-, and 52-foot center console models. These offerings helped the company scale production while maintaining its reputation for quality and speed.
While the center console line gained traction, the C4400 catamaran struggled to find its footing. Despite its performance capabilities, market dynamics were shifting. Outboard-powered sport catamarans were rapidly gaining popularity, leaving stern-drive models behind.
The demand for stern-drive cats cooled significantly, forcing Mystic to rethink its approach once again. Rather than doubling down on a declining segment, the company pivoted toward innovation; this time focusing on outboard-powered catamarans.
Mystic’s next major move came with the introduction of the C4000, a 40-foot outboard-powered catamaran designed to meet the evolving expectations of performance boating enthusiasts. The model featured a well-thought-out interior layout, exceptional rough-water capability, and the signature handling characteristics Mystic had become known for.
However, early iterations of the C4000 faced a critical limitation: power. Equipped with six-cylinder 400-horsepower engines from Mercury Racing, the boat lacked the acceleration and top-end speed needed to compete with other sport catamarans in its class.
Even the introduction of 450-horsepower engines in 2019 provided only incremental improvements. While performance increased, it still fell short of market expectations.
Everything changed in 2023 with the release of the Mercury Racing 500R outboard engine. Combined with Mystic’s refinements to the C4000’s aerodynamics and lamination process, the new power setup transformed the boat’s performance profile.
Acceleration improved dramatically, shifting from sluggish to responsive, while top speeds reached the coveted 120-mph benchmark, widely regarded as the industry standard for high-performance catamarans.
The result? A complete redefinition of the C4000’s position in the market.
Today, the C4000 stands as Mystic Powerboats’ top-selling model and a true contender in the high-performance sport cat segment. Demand has surged, with the company’s production slots for 2026 already sold out. New orders are currently being scheduled for 2027 builds; an indicator of just how far the model has come.
According to John Cosker, the formula for success is straightforward: speed matters.
“The big thing, I think, is that it got faster,” Cosker noted. “It had lots of great original features, and it still does. Now it’s fast enough for buyers in the market.”
